Even police can have a pepper spray accident
I was recently looking around the internet for anything in the news about pepper spray. I always try and keep up to date on pepper spray happenings so I know if anything will affect me or my customers. In my searching I found a site that reports on news from Buffalo, New York. The article I found was a little shocking but is a perfect example of why it is important to be as safe as possible when keeping pepper spray on your.
Back in July of 2008 two officers were responding to a call. While in route to the call the pepper spray, belonging to the officer in the passenger seat, discharged. It filled the car with the ever so potent pepper spray. Needless to say that didn’t result in anything good. The officer driving the car was completely choked by the pepper spray and was not able to control the car. The car began to swerve around the road striking another car and then crashed into a house.
No one was seriously injured from the bizarre pepper spray mishap but it does go to show how important it is to make sure you are safe when carrying pepper spray. If you are traveling in a car with pepper spray it is very important that the locking device that most bottles include is locked in place to ensure there won't be an accidental discharge.
Pepper spray is extremely potent and should NEVER be discharged inside a confined place otherwise it could result and a similar accident. Most every brand of pepper spray now has some type of swivel or a flip top to prevent accidental discharge. If these safety mechanisms are broken off the pepper spray should be thrown away immediately to ensure it does not go off by itself.
