Important Little Things With Home Security
When it comes to protecting your home and property the most obvious things are often over looked. Most of this time it is not always a big deal, however there are a few things that can lead to larger losses. I have previously written about some of the simple things that can be done to protect your home. These range from making sure your windows are locked and proper outside lighting.
I recently saw something on It Takes A Thief showing on the Discovery Channel. If you are not familiar with this show then general basis revolves around two ex-burglars that find an unsuspecting home and convince the occupants to allow them to burglarize it on national TV. The whole point of the show is to demonstrate how vulnerable most homes are both with and without security systems. It is a very impressive program and provides viewers with some fantastic information.
Now, back to what I witnessed on the show. John the burglar was going through a very nice house founding all kinds of goodies. While he was searching through the master bedroom he found a set of keys that belonged to a Jaguar. As most of you know a Jaguar is a pretty expensive vehicle ranging from 60-200 thousand dolor's. Well John decided to take these keys to see if the car was in the garage. He checked it out and the car was gone.
John and his partner in crime had finished going though the house gathering up anything of value. When they were pulling down the road leaving the house, the homeowners drove past them in their shinny Jaguar. John gets out of his truck and tells his friend to keep going. He silently walks back down the road and waits until the homeowners go inside. He then runs over to the Jaguar and unlocks the door with the keys he had taken earlier. John then proceeds to get into the car and drive away.
Pretty amazing huh?
When I saw this, it absolutely blew me away. I deal with home security on a day to day basis and always tell my clients to watch out for the little things. I have always advised individuals to make sure they keep spare keys to their cars in a hidden safe location. This is very important to do and it is overlooked 99% of the time.
This is just one example of what can happen by leaving your keys out in the open. Another common event that can take place is when the car is actually located at your home. If a burglar locates those spare keys they now have a nice new car to help them carry all of the valuables that were collected. If they are able to get your car that just adds insult to injury.
The moral of the story is to keep any spare keys to cars, motorcycles, or ATV's hidden in a safe location or even in a lock box. This will ensure there is no opportunity for a burglar to steal your car or any of your other toys. You work hard for your toys and they are worth protecting.
